Sae-eun Park finished first out of 130 applicants in its annual open competition to get a contract at the Paris Opera Ballet. There was only one spot. Soon after, she competed in the internal concours to finish at the top again to get promoted from quadrille to coryphee (again, there was only one spot open for promotion!).
If you know the Paris Opera Ballet, you know that they rarely admit foreigners, let alone, non-Europeans. It was a huge deal when the Argentinian Ludmila Pagliero became an etoile (literally meaning “star”, the top rank of the Paris Opera Ballet).
